It’s a small world after all

Today was my first day back in Buenos Aires for the holidays. Despite being a bit tired from the trip, I decided to go to a milonga. Not any milonga would have sufficed, but Parakultural had an impressive show today: Color Tango. I had first come across this band back in 2010, when I met their keyboard player while watching a soccer game in Philadelphia.

So I went over to Parakultural after dinner, and found that the concert would start at 1:30 AM, almost three hours after my arrival at the venue. Nevertheless, after a little wander around the neighborhood, I went in, sat down and read my newspaper while the dancers began to show up. At some point, the place got quite crowded, and so when another person showed up by herself, she was seated in the same table as me. She told me she was waiting for a friend of his, and we started chatting. His friend -also named Pablo- eventually turned up, accompanied by two more people, one of which was a Japanese violinist from New York called Machiko.

At this point I should tell a brief side-story: a few weeks ago I came across a tango group from New York City, whose violinist was Japanese. I thought this would be too much of a coincidence, but just in case I asked “Are you a member of the Urban Tango Trio?” To my astonishment -and hers- the answer was “yes”. One of those occasions when you really believe it’s a small world after all.

After this, the night only got better. We stayed at the milonga until well past 4 AM, the other friend I didn’t mention above turned out to be a very peculiar character, and I got to briefly talk to the keyboard player I had met last year. All in all, I enjoyed a very good first night in Buenos Aires. Today (for it is now 5:30 AM) there will be more opportunities to continue the tanguero tour: Orquesta Vale Tango + La Púa + Black at Torquato Tasso, Orquesta Misteriosa Buenos Aires, and the milonga Zonatango. So many options! Buenos Aires in December is simply great…

PS: another note of color. Pablo met Machiko through Emilio Teubal, an Argentine pianist from New York City that came to play at Rutgers with his group La Balteuband a few years back.
